[01:58.46] Niggas' breath stank, all they do is shit talk
[02:01.05] People want a real man, I made 'em wait this long
[02:03.97] Maybe if he bombs, he'll quit and keep actin'
[02:06.63] And save paper like your aunt does with McDonald napkins
[02:09.80] How'd it happen? Honesty did it
[02:11.84] See all of my competition at the bodies exhibit
[02:14.85] Yeah I bodied the limits and I get at them fakers
[02:17.74] Motherfuck if you hate it, cremated them haters
[02:20.39] So, my studio be a funeral
[02:22.93] Yeah, this is our year, oh you didn't know?
[02:26.13] Uh, yeah I'm killin' you, step inside the lion's den
[02:29.34] Man I'm hov if the 'O' was an 'I' instead
[02:32.41] On stage with my family in front of me
[02:34.88] I am what I am: everything I wanna be
[02:38.88] All these haters
[02:41.92] See you later
[02:44.33] All that I could do
[02:46.72] But you dont even feel me though
[02:48.31] I know you know I know you got that power
[02:54.19] That power
[03:13.12] This is on a bus back from camp.
[03:15.13] I'm thirteen and so are you.
[03:17.78] Before I left for camp I imagined it would be me and three or four
[03:20.66] Other dudes I hadn't met yet,
[03:21.92] Running around all summer, getting into trouble.
[03:24.02] It turned out it would be me and just one girl.
[03:27.28] That's you.
[03:28.89] And we're still at camp as long as we're on the bus and not
[03:31.20] At the pickup point where our parents would be waiting for us.
[03:33.33] We're still wearing our orange camp
[03:35.66] T-shirts. We still smell like pineneedles.
[03:38.07] I like you and you like me and I more-than-like you,
[03:42.09] But I don't know if you do or don't more-than-like me.
[03:44.63] You've never said, so I haven't been saying anything all summer,
[03:47.88] Content to enjoy the small miracle of a girl choosing to
[03:50.09] Talk to me and choosing to do so again the next day and so on.
[03:53.57] A girl who's smart and funny and who,
[03:57.44] If I say something dumb for a laugh,
[03:59.34] Is willing to say something two or three times as dumb to make me
[04:02.55] Laugh, but who also gets weird and
[04:04.38] Wise sometimes in a way I could never be.
[04:06.75] A girl who reads books that no one's assigned to her,
[04:09.99] Whose curly brown hair has a line running through it
[04:12.59] From where she put a tie to hold it up while it was still wet
[04:15.94] Back in the real world we don't go to the same school,
[04:19.46] And unless one of our families moves to a dramatically
[04:21.50] Different neighborhood, we won't go to the same high school.
[04:24.97] So, this is kind of it for us. Unless I say something.
[04:28.98] And it might especially be it for us if I actually do say something.
[04:33.12] The sun's gone down and the bus is quiet. A lot of kids are asleep.
[04:37.68] We're talking in whispers about a tree we saw at a rest stop that
[04:41.10] Looks like a kid we know. And then I'm like,
[04:44.26] "Can I tell you something?" And all of a sudden I'm telling you.
[04:48.94] And I keep telling you and it all comes out of me and it keeps coming
[04:52.65] And your face is there and gone and there and gone as we pass
[04:55.08] Underneath the orange lamps that line the sides
[04:56.87] Of the highway. And there's no expression on it.
[05:00.05] And I think just after a point I'm just talking to lengthen the
[05:02.77] Time where we live in a world where
[05:04.87] You haven't said "yes" or "no" yet.
[05:07.78] And regrettably I end up using the word "destiny."
[05:11.23] I don't remember in what context.
[05:14.23] Doesn't really matter.
[05:16.28] Before long I'm out of stuff to say and you smile and say, "okay."
[05:21.66] I don't know exactly what you mean by it,
[05:24.23] But it seems vaguely positive and I would leave in order not to
[05:27.87] Spoil the moment, but there's nowhere to go because we're on a bus.
[05:30.72] So I pretend like I'm asleep and before long, I really am.
[05:35.47] I wake up, the bus isn't moving anymore.
[05:39.71] The domed lights that line the center aisle are all on.
[05:42.68] I turn and you're not there.
[05:45.04] Then again a lot of kids aren't in their seats anymore.
[05:47.67] We're parked at the pick-up point,
[05:49.47] Which is in the parking lot of a Methodist church.
[05:51.91] The bus is half empty.
[05:54.10] You might be in your dad's car by now,
[05:56.03] Your bags and things piled high in the trunk.
[05:58.23] The girls in the back of the bus are shrieking and laughing and
[06:00.97] Taking their sweet time disembarking as I swing my legs out into the
[06:03.92] Aisle to get up off the bus,
[06:06.03] Just as one of them reaches my row.
[06:08.24] It used to be our row, on our way off.
[06:11.43] It's Michelle, a girl who got suspended from third grade for a week
[06:16.49] After throwing rocks at my head.
[06:18.59] Adolescence is doing her a ton of favors
[06:20.70] Body-wise. She stops and looks down at me.
[06:23.76] And her head is blasted from behind by the dome light,
[06:26.46] So I can't really see her face,
[06:27.93] But I can see her smile. And she says one word:
[06:32.24] "Destiny."
[06:34.35] Then her and the girls clogging the aisles behind her
[06:37.22] All laugh and then she turns and leads them off the bus.
[06:39.97] I didn't know you were friends with them.
[06:44.78] I find my dad in the parking lot.
[06:47.61] He drives me back to our house and camp is over. So is summer
[06:52.64] Even though there's two weeks until school starts.
[06:55.70] This isn't a story about how girls are evil or how love is bad,
[07:01.07] This is a story about how I learned
[07:02.67] Something and I'm not saying this thing is true or not
[07:04.78] I'm just saying it's what I learned.
[07:06.37] I told you something.
[07:08.14] It was just for you and you told everybody.
[07:11.30] So I learned cut out the middle man,
[07:12.94] Make it all for everybody, always.
[07:14.71] Everybody can't turn around and tell
[07:16.33] Everybody, everybody already knows, I told them.
[07:18.74] But this means there isn't a place
[07:20.34] In my life for you or someone like you.
[07:22.45] Is it sad?
[07:22.91] Sure.
[07:23.77] But it's a sadness I chose.
[07:25.38] I wish I could say this was a story about how I got on the bus a
[07:28.77] Boy and got off a man more cynical, hardened, and mature and shit.
[07:32.49] But that's not true.
[07:34.57] The truth is I got on the bus a boy.
[07:36.76] And I never got off the bus.
[07:38.88] I still haven't.
